Associate Economist

Jesus Cañas is an associate
economist at the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas in El
Paso. Cañas has contributed to the writing and
production of several Federal Reserve Bank publications
such as Business Frontier, Crossroads, Vista, Houston
Business, and Southwest Economy.
His research at the Fed focuses
on issues pertaining to the Mexican economy, the maquiladora
industry, and the U.S.–Mexico border economy.
Cañas, in collaboration with Keith Phillips,
senior economist at the San Antonio Branch, developed
a set of coincident economic indexes for Texas–Mexico
border metropolitan areas (El Paso, Brownsville, Laredo
and McAllen), which they use to analyze business conditions
in those regions.
Cañas holds a BA in economics
and finance and MS in economics from the University
of Texas at El Paso.
